William Parkes was born in 1870 and was the son of James and Mary Ann Parkes of 12 Strut's Yard, Mansfield Woodhouse. William married Mary Ann Cooke (born 8th March 1879 ) they married in 1907 they lived at 76 Bould Street, Mansfield, Commencing 4th December 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings a week. After the war she lived at 98 King Street, Warsop Vale and married William Buckland in 1919.
Worked at Silk's Quarry.

Private William Parkes enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Mansfield Woodhouse, he had served previously and was wounded twice in the Boar War in South Africa. He was killed in action on 19th May 1916 and is buried at Bois-De-Noulette British Cemetery, Aix- Noulette.
