Henry Herbert was born in 1896 he was the son of Henry a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Phillips née Sanderson of 2 Castle Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Henry was born in 1854 at Boughton, Mary Ann Sanderson was born in 1858 at Mansfield Woodhouse, they were married on 30th October 1876 at St Edmund Church, Mansfield Woodhouse, they had 11 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 his family are living at 7 Common Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse, Henry 57 yrs is a coal miner hewer and 4 of their children including Henry Herbert 15 yrs a coal miner Henry Herbert married Ada Unwin (born 14th October 1898) they were married in 1918. they had a daughter Irene born 30th July 1918, the family lived at 2 Castle Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Commencing 17th February 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Private Henry Herbert Phillips enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Mansfield Woodhouse, he initially served with the service number 10597 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 17th August 1918 and is buried at Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
