Alfred George also known as Albert Raven was born in 1893 at Carlton, Coalville, Suffolk he was the son of Robert Raven a scavenger and his first wife Sarah née Pulford, Robert was born in 1865 at Carlton, Suffolk, he died in 1917 aged 52 years, Sarah Pulford was born in 1864 at Ditchingham, Norfolk, ahe died in 1908 aged 44 yrs Norfolk, they were married on 15th November 1885 at Earshaw, Norfolk, they went on to have 16 children, sadly 5 died in infancy or early childhood. His father married his second wife Harriett Cox on 21st January 1909 at Oulton, Norfolk. In 1911 his father Robert is living at 7 The Grange, Beccles Road, Oulton, Robert is 42 yrs and a scavenger he is living with his second wife Harriett In 1911 Alfred George was lodging with Harry and Ethel Worrall and family at 39 Sheepwash Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse. Alfred's medals and personal effects were sent to Ethel Worrall (as he had no living close family) she was his legatee.
He was a coal miner pony driver in 1911

7th Bn Leicestershire Regiment
Private Alfred George Raven enlisted at Mansfield on 25th September 1914, giving his age as 21 yrs and 164 days, he was a collier, he was residing at Carlton, Suffolk. He served with the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. Landing in France on 29th July 1915 he was killed in action on 26th September 1915 and is buried at Bienvillers Military Cemetery, France
Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 25/11/1915 Photograph printed. Items returned, ID disc, 2 letters, 4 photographs, pipe and tobacco. His brother Christopher Alan Raven, served with the Royal Munster Fusiliers, he died on 8th September 1915 at Gallipoli, he is buried at Cairo War Cemetery, Egypt, (his brother is not recorded on this Nottinghamshire Roll of Honour.)
