Horace Bernard Smith was born in 1898 at Nottingham he was the son of William a colliery banksman and Thurza Smith née Ward of 26 Taylors Yard, Leen Side, Nottingham. William Smith was born in 1871 at Nottingham, Thirza Ward was born in 1873 also at Nottingham, they were married in 1891 at Nottingham, they had 3 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving child was William born 1896 at Nottingham. In 1911 the family are living at Thompson Alley, Westgate, Mansfield. William is 40 yrs and is a pit banksman, he is living with his wife Thirza 39 yrs and their 2 sons William 15 yrs a coal miner pony driver and Horace 13 yrs also a coal miner pony driver.
He was a coal miner pony driver.

Private Horace Bernard Smith enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 12/13th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, He died of wounds on 23rd August 1918 and is buried at Connaught Cemetery, Thiepval.
