Joseph Starbuck was born in 1895 he was the son of the late Frederick a pig iron furnace man and Mary Ann Starbuck née Osgothorpe of 111 Sherwood Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Frederick was born in 1850 at Hickling, Nottinghamshire, he died in 1902 aged 52 yrs, Mary Ann Osgothorpe was born in 1851 at Boune, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1872 at Bourne they went on to have 13 children, sadly 4 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 65 Thoresby Road, Mansfield Woodhouse. Mary Ann 60 yrs is a widow she is living with her children including Joseph 16 yrs a colliery banksman

13th Bn Alexandra Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment)
Private Joseph Starbuck enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Mansfield Woodhouse, he initially served with the service number 28484 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment later transferring to the 13th battalion Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the battle of the Somme, he is buried at Loos British Cemetery .
