Herbert Elliott Whysall was born in 1899 at Swanwick he was the son of Louis a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Whysall née Elliott of Redcote, Morven Avenue, Mansfield Woodhouse. Louis was born in 1877 at Ripley, Mary Ann Elliott was born in 1873 at Swanwick, they were married on 6th February 1901 they had a further son Lois born 1902 also at Swanwick. In 1911 the family were living at 17 Mount Street, Mansfield Louis is 34 yrs old and a coal miner, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 38 yrs and their 2 sons, Herbert Elliott 12 yrs and Louis 9 yrs

2/5th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Herbert Whysall enlisted at Mansfield , he served with the 2/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 20, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact) Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. Bay 7.
