Clarence Woodhead was born in 1899 he was the son of Joseph a coal miner and Ada Woodhead née Smith of 5 Cavendish Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Joseph was born in 1871 at Langwith, Ada Smith was born in 1873 at Barlborough, they were married on 12th November 1893 at Elmton, Derbyshire they went on to have 5 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 5 Cavendish Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, Joseph 40 yrs is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Ada 38 yrs and their 4 children including Clarence 12 yrs of age.

Private Clarence Woodhead enlisted on 26th May 1915 at Mansfiedld, giving his age falsely as 18 years and 8 months, (born in 1889 he was only 16 yrs and 8 months. 5 days later on 30th May 1915 he was discharged being under age He re-enlisted once he was of age and served wit the Machine Gun Crops, he was killed in action on 12th April 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
