Frederick James Coates was born in 1896 at Hanbury, Staffordshire and was the son of Frederick Coates a colliery repairer and the late Fanny Coates née Cockfield. His father Frederick was born in 1863 at Durham, his mother Fanny Cockfield was born in 1865 at Middleton, Yorkshire she died in 1907 aged 42 yrs in Staffordshire, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Richmond, Yorkshire registration district, they had the following children, Lottie b1887 Barton, Yorkshire, Annie b1890 Hanbury, Kate b1893 Hanbury, Frederick James b1896 Hanbury, Harry b 1897 Marchington, Staffordshire and Gladys May b1904 Newborough. Following the death of his mother Fanny his father moved to Nottinghamshire, and in the 1911 census we find the family lodging at 5 Portland Road, Shirebrook, they are shown as Frederick 48 yrs a colliery repairer, he is living with his children, Kate 18 yrs no occupation listed, Frederick James 15 yrs a mine clipper, Harry 14 yrs a coal sorter and Gladys Mary 7 yrs of age, the family are lodging with John Simpson 43 yrs a coal miner hewer and his wife Margaret 43 yrs .

Private Frederick James Coates enlisted at Doncaster, he served with the 9th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he died on 3rd November 1918 he is buried at Hamburg Cemetery, Germany
