He was the son of Charles and Elizabeth Clarke and the brother of Victor Clarke. In 1911 they lived on Main Street Awsworth Nottinghamshire.
In 1911 he was a pit labourer working below ground.

16th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Charles Clarke, enlisted in Ilkeston whilst residence at Awsworth and served with the 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Chatsworth Rifles), he was killed in action on 5th August 1916. He is buried in Gorre British and Indian Cemetery 2.B.14
