Alfred Sherwood was born in 1879 in Bombay. He married Hannah Truswell (born 14th January 1886 ) in 1906 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at Parkhill, Awsworth and had the following children, Margaret b1907, Violet b1911, Alfred b1913, Edith b1916 and Lottie b1916. In 1911 the family are living at Park Hill, Awsworth Alfred (shown as Albert ) is 29 yrs and is a charge coal miner Commencing 28th April 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 37 shillings and 11 pence a week.

1st Bn Essex Regiment
Private Alfred Sherwood enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Awsworth, he initially served with the service number 200822 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was serving with the 1st battalion Essex Regiment when he died of wounds on 13th October 1918. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery grave reference 67.J.7
