Walter Russell Frank Adcock known as Russell was born in 1894 the son of Walter an iron foundry labourer and Jane Adcock (née Norris). Walter was born in 1866 at Chilwell, Jane Norris in 1867 at Harley, Leicestershire. Married on 22nd December 1889 at Attenborough, they had the following children all of whom were born in Chilwell - Grace b.1891, Walter Russell Frank b.1894, Harold b.1896, Fred b.1899, Gertrude Lizzie b.1901, Doris b.1906 and Edna Ivy b.1908. In 1911, the family lived at 41, Stoney Street, Beeston, Nottingham. Ethel was a lace mender, Grace a laundress, Russell a labourer and Harold a lace threader. Walter married Annie Nellie Hofton in 1913. Following Walter’s death his widow lived at 29, Nelson Street, Tantany Estate, West Bromwich.

9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Walter Adcock enlisted at Nottingham and landed in Gallipoli on 6th September 1915. Surviving this campaign, he was transferred to he Western Front. The 9th Battalion alternated between the front line near Thiepval between 7th and 23rd September. Their area was on the left of the Albert-Bapaume road and they used Nab Valley to access the front. It was an area of heavy shelling. Walter was one of three other ranks killed on 7th September 1916 and one of seventeen 9th Battalion men buried in Ovillers Military Cemetery. Grave Reference: I E 32 .
His brother Frederick Adcock attested at Ilkeston on 2nd March 1916 and went missing 21st March 1918.
