George Brompton was born in 1898 at Balderton and was the son of John William a maltster and Mary Jane Brompton née Scrimshaw of 41, Grove St., New Balderton, Newark. His father John William was born in 1876 at Balderton and his mother Mary Jane Scrimshaw was born in 1877 at Newark, they were married in 1898 at Newark, they went on to have the following children, George b1898, Lucy b1900, Alice Mary b1904, Lily b1907, Nelly b1909, Hilda May b1911 and twins Kathleen and John b1917 and Ada b1981, all were born in Balderton. In the 1911 census the family are living at 31 Smith Street, New Baldeton and are shown as John William 35 yrs a maltster, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 34 years and their children, George E 12 yrs a scholar, Lucy 11 yrs a scholar, Alice Mary 7 yrs a scholar, Lily 4 yrs Nelly 2 yrs and Hilda May under 1 year of age.

Private George Brompton enlisted on 20th May 1916 at Newark, he gave his age as 18 years and 14 days, his address as 41 Grove Street, New Balderton, Nottinghamshire, he gave his occupation as that of a fireman. His next of kin was his father John William Brompton of the same address. He was posted to the reserves the following day and mobilised for war on 14th December 1916, He landed in France on 8th June 1917 and was transferred to the Welch Regiment on 12th July 1917. On 27th February 1918 he was transferred to No 1 Entrenching battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 26th May 1918 and is buried at Esquelbecq Military Cemetery, Nord, France. grave reference II.D.30
