He was the son of John James and Mary Ann Jane Cudworth and the brother of John, Mabel, Royce and Reginald Cudworth. In 1901 they lived at 43 Regent Street Beeston Nottingham. John James and Mary Ann later moved to 33 Imperial Road Beeston.
In 1911 he was serving in Hong Kong with 1st Bn King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
