Harold Turner was born in 1895 at Rotherham and was the son of John Henry a boiler/fireman at a colliery and Kate Turner née Pryor of Ravensfield, Rotherham. His father John Henry was born in 1857 at Dalton, Yorkshire and his mother Kate Pryor was born in 1857 at Sheffield, they were married in 1887 their marriage was recorded in the Rotherham registration district, they went on to have 3 children, Clifford b1891, Dennis b1893 and Harold, all were born at Eastwood, Rotherham. In the 1911 census the family are living at Ravensfield, Rotherham and are shown as John Henry 54 yrs a boiler/fireman at a colliery, he was living with his wife Kate 54 yrs and their children, Clifford 20 yrs a railway engine cleaner, Dennis 18 yrs a joiners apprentice in a colliery and Harold 16 yrs a colliery labourer. Harold Turner left his parents address and lived at 14 Milton Street, Balderton, Newark.

Private Harold Turner enlisted at Newark whist residing at Ravenfield, Rotherham, Yorkshire, he served with the 85th Field Company Royal Engineers. He landed in Egypt on 7th August 1915 later taking part in the Gallipoli Campaign he suffered a severe head wound and was taken to the Alexandria General Hospital on October 2nd 1915. He was treated for his wounds however he died on 7th November 1915 and is buried at Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Article published 4th December 1915 in the Newark Herald :- For some years prior to the war lived at 14, Milton Street, New Balderton and worked as a smith at Messrs. Simpson’s. He was a native of Rotherham. When war broke out he enlisted in the Royal Engineers and in course of time was drafted to the Dardanelles. He was admitted to the General Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt, on October 2nd, suffering from severe wounds in the head. He underwent two operations, but these were of no avail and he died on the 7th ulto.
