John William Hollis was born in 1892 at Brinsley and was the eldest son of Harold a coal miner hewer and Esther Laura Hollis née Hazelwood of Broad Lane, Brinsley. His father Harold was born in 1865 at Brinsley, his mother Esther Laura Hazelwood was born in 1871 also at Brinsley, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Rhoda b1890, John William b1892, Jane Matilda b1895, Eli b1898, Bertha Alice b1899, David Henry b1903, Roland b1907 and Charles Eric b1910. In the 1911 census the family are living at Broad Lane, Brinsley and are shown as Harold 46 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Esther Laura 40 yrs and their children, John William 19 yrs a colliery road man, Eli 13 yrs a pony driver below ground, Bertha Alice 12 yrs a scholar, David Henry 8 yrs, Roland 4 yrs and Charles Eric 1 year old.
In the 1911 census he is a colliery roadman

1st Bn Lincolnshire Regiment
Private John William Hollis enlisted at Ilkeston whilst residing at Eastwood, he served wit the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and was killed in action on 4th October 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
