Samuel Lane (junior) was the only surviving son of Samuel Lane (senior) a coal miner hewer and Elizabeth Lane nee Taylor of Nottingham Road, Hill Top, Eastwood. His father Samuel Lane (senior) was born in 1863 at Blidworth, his mother Elizabeth Taylor was born in 1866 at Arnold, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had three children sadly however two died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Main Street, Newthorpe and are shown as Samuel 48 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 45 yrs and their son Samuel 14 yrs a letter press printer.
He worked as a letter press printer.

Lance Corporal Samuel Lane enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Newthorpe, he served with the 2nd battalion Royal Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 4th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, having no known grave his name is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
