Samuel Meakin was born in 1882 at Newthorpe and was the son of Richard a coal miner hewer and the late Mary Ann Meakin née Burrows of Newthorpe Common, Eastwood. His father Richard was born in 1848 at Greasley, his mother Mary Ann Burrows was born in 1849 at Kimberley she died in 1908 aged 59 yrs, they were married in 1870 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had the following children all of whom were born at Greasley, Annie b1870, Elizabeth b1872, Margaret b1875, George b1877, Hannah b1880, Ebenezer b1882, Samuel b1882, William b1886, Sarah Ann b1888 and Mary b1890. In the 1911 census his father is living on his own at Newthorpe Common, he is shown as Richard Meakin 63 yrs a widow and coal miner hewer, he stated he had been married for 41 yrs and had 10 children 1 of whom died in infancy. In the same 1911 census Samuel has left the family home, he is living as a boarder at Raglan Street, Hill Top, Eastwood, he is boarding with Thomas Chambers 28 yrs a coal miner loader and his wife Phoebe Ann Chambers 28 yrs and their children Elizabeth Chambers 4 yrs and George Chambers 1 year old. Samuel Meakin is shown as being 28 yrs and a coal miner loader. Samuels pension record cards shows at the time of his death Samuels dependent was his unmarried wife Phoebe Ann Chambers of Raglan Street, Hill Top Eastwood.

1st Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Samuel Meakin enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Eastwood, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died on 19th October 1918 at rd Scottish General Hospital at Glasgow, of bronchitis and pneumonia. His body was returned to his family and he was buried at Heanor Cemetery. Grave Reference: B6704
