Leonard Boden Shipstone was born in 1897 at Eastwood and was the son of Edward a collier/banksman and Elizabeth Boden Shipstone, née Mellor of Nottingham Road, Giltbrook. His father Edward was born in 1862 in Eastwood and his mother Elizabeth Boden Mellor was born in 1859 at Ilkeston, they were married in 1885, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 8 children, sadly one was to die in infancy their surviving children were ; Elizabeth Ann b1887 Greasley, Percy b1890 Eastwood, Harold b1891 Eastwood, Ethel b1893 Eastwood, Leonard b1897 Eastwood, Florence b1899 Giltbrook and Ilford Rhoda b1903 Giltbrook. In the 1911 cencus the family are living at Nottingham Road, Giltbrook and are shown as Edward 49 yrs a colliery banksman, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Bowden 52 yrs and their children Elizabeth Ann 24 yrs a dress maker, Percy 21 yrs a grocery assistant, Harold 20 yrs a baker/confectioner, Ethel 18 yrs a drapers assistant, Leonard 14 yrs a errand boy, Florry 12 yrs a scholar and Rhoda 8 yrs. He was the son of Edward and Elizabeth Shipstone of Nottingham Road Giltbrook Nottinghamshire. His brother Percy Shipstone was killed serving with the Cheshire Regiment 23/6/1917. His father Edward died on 13th August 1919 aged 57 yrs and his mother Elizabeth died 23rd January 1934 aged 75 yrs.

Leonard Boden Shipstone enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 402nd battery Royal Horse Artillery he died of wounds on 18th May 1917 and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery
