George Henry Syson was born in 1895 at Greasley and was the son of Frederick a coal miner hewer and Sarah Syson née Harrison of Newthorpe Nottinghamshire. His father Frederick was born in 1870 at Greasley, his mother Sarah Jemima Harrison was born in 1871 at Awsworth, they were married on 31st March 1889 at Newthorpe and went on to have the following children, John b1892, George b1895, Arthur b1898, Fred b1899, Ethel b1902, Louie b1905, Eva b1907 and Lawrence b1910 all were born in Greasley. In the 1911 census the family are living at South Street, Giltbrook and are shown as Frederick Syson 41 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Sarah 40 yrs and their children, John 19 yrs a coal miner hewer, George 16 yrs a caol miner labourer, Arthur 13 yrs a coal miner labourer, Ethel 9 yrs, Louie 6 yrs, Eva 4 yrs and Lawrence 1 year of age.
in the 1911 census he is a coal miner labourer.

2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private George Henry Syson enlisted at Ilkeston whilst residing at Newthorpe, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 4th March 1918 and is buried at Mount Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, France.
