Alfred Figg was born in 1891 and was the son of George a farm labourer and Caroline Figg née Messingham of 3 Derby Road, Risley George Figg was born in 1843 at Wobourne, Sussex, Caroline Messingham was born in 1850 at Bramshot, Hampshire, married on 20th July 1872 at Midhurst, Sussex, In 1911 they lived on Nottingham Road Risley Derbyshire. Alfred married Mary Elizabeth Oldershaw (born 26th April 1890) in 1910 their marriage was recorded in the Long Eaton Registration district, they lived at 19 Alexander Street, Stapleford and had the following children, George b1912, Alfred born March 1914, Frank & Leslie (twins ) b1915, Ernest born October 1916 and Eric born December 1918 all were born in Stapleford. Commencing 28th April 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week.

Gunner Alfred Figg attested on 12th December 1915 at Stanton, giving his age as 26 yrs and 9 months, and occupation as a pipe moulder, posted to the reserves he was mobilised for war on 8th October 1917. He embarked from Southampton on 30th March 1918 landing the following day at Le Harve. Posted to the 278 Siege Battery on 8th April 1918 and killed in action on 8th October 1918. Buried at Bourlon Wood, Cemetery, France.
