Bert Gwinnett Phillips was baptised on 3rd December 1886 the son of the late Henry a shop keeper and Mary Philips née Higginbottom. He was boarding at 2 James Street Stapleford Nottinghamshire in 1911 he is shown as being 24 yrs and is a house painter, he is living with his future in laws , Frederick Ridgard 61 yrs a jobbing gardener and his family. Bert married Lille Jane Ridgard in 1914 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they had a daughter Margaret Blanche Phillips born June 1915, Commencing 9th December 1918 Lille Jane Phillips was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week, she was living at 5 Blackpool Road, Lytham St Anns, Lancashire. .
He was a house painter in 1911.

Sgt Bert Gwinnett Phillips enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Long Eaton, he landed in France on 12th May 1915 and was killed in action on 25th April 1918. His name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium
