John Robert Richardson was born in Clayworth, Retford in 1882 and was the first child of George Richardson who had married Fanny Hiley at Retford earlier in the year. George was part of the farming community of Clayworth. Over the next few years, George and Fanny had produced four siblings for John, George born 1896, Mary Ann 1898, Donald in 1900 and Arthur in 1907. At the time of the 1901 census, 8 year old John was staying with his aunt Matilda (his father’s sister) in Clayworth but ten years later he was living as a boarder in nearby Misterton and employed as a labourer in a chemical manure works.

Driver John Robert Richsrdson Retford Times 14 Feb 1919 This gallant soldier Driver John Robert Richsrdson of Clayworth, was with the British Force at Kut and after the surrender of General Townsend, was reported missing. From 1916 to October 1918 his friends had no news from him. On October 30th 1918 official information was received that he had died between 1st and 30th September 1916 at Farsus, Turkey. He enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery in 1911 and was serving in India when war broke out. Mrs Richardson has two other sons serving, William who has served four years with the B E F in France and Donald who was called up on reaching the age of 18 last March
