Robert Cairns Hall was born in Cuckney in 1894, the youngest child of George and Maria (née Robinson). They had married in Southwell in 1879. George was a blacksmith and originated from Cuckney but the couple started their marriage living in Boughton which was Maria’s home town. After a brief stay in Blidworth they moved to Cuckney about 1893. On their travels they had five more siblings for Robert, (Frederick) Arthur born 1880, Francis 1882, Harriet 1884, Florence 1888 and Algernon in1892. By 1911 only the two youngest, Algermon and Robert, were still living with their parents in Cuckney, where Robert was working as a house painter and by 1913 had volunteered for the Royal Marine Light Infantry.
In 1911 he was a house painter. Enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry on 24 September 1913
