Arthur John Spittlefield was born in 1894 at Misson, Nottinghamshire he was the son of James a farm labourer and Annie Spittlehouse née Wass His father James was born in 1863 at Sandtoft and his wife Annie Wass was born in 1874 at Mission, they were married on 11th August 1894 at Fenwick, Yorkshire and had 5 children, Arthur James b1895 Mission, Harold b1898 Braithwaite, Yorkshire , Harold b1898 Braithwaite, Margaret Ruth b1899 Braithwaite, James William b1900 Braithwaite and Ada Gladys b1909 Darrington In the 1901 census the family are living at Braithwaite, Doncaster In the 1911 census the family are living at Darrington near Pontefract, Yorkshire and are shown as James 48 yrs a farm labourer he is living with his wife Annie 37 yrs and their children, Harold 13 yrs a scholar, Margaret Ruth 12 yrs a scholar, James William 11 yrs a scholar and Ada Gladys 2 yrs. In the 1911 census Arthur has moved out of the family home and is living on a farm at Austerfield near Bawtry, he is shown as being 16 yrs of age a servant lad on a farm, he is living with William Thomas Cullen 40 yrs a farmer and his family The family later moved to Station Lane Farnsfield.

9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Arthur John Spittlehouse enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Farnsfield and served with the 9th battalion, Sherwood Foresters , he landed in the Balkans prior to 31st December 1915. He served on Gallipoli, in Egypt and during the Somme, Messines and 3rd Ypres campaigns. The German offensives of early 1918 had fallen either side of the battalion's front and men awaited the next German attack. The 25 April 1918 was misty and very quiet during the morning. At 3.10 pm and 7.30 pm, the enemy, heavily shelled the front areas along the Loos - Hulluch Road and Posen dump came in for particular attention from High Explosive and Gas shells, resulting in one man being wounded and Arthur being killed. He is buried at Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France, grave III. 4. 43.
