In the 1911 census , he is a lodger , he is boarding at Main Street, Farnsfield with Eland Johnson 56 yrs a waggoner and his family, Charles is shown as being 21 yrs of age , single and a horseman. He married his wife Betsy Stevens in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham Registration area. Charles pension record shows they had a daughter Gladys May born 23rd April 1911 the card states she was born before wedlock. They went on to have a son Cyril born in 1913, his birth was recorded in the Southwell Registration District. Following his death his wife Betsy (Gertrude) was residing at 4 Canterbury Square, Thorne, near Doncaster she was granted a pension of 15 shillings a week for herself and one child to commence from 21st February 1916.

1/8th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Charles Thorpe enlisted on 9th May 1913 at Southwell, giving his age as 21 yrs and 9 months, he was a farm labourer and was living at Farnsfield. He served in the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters and was embodied on 5th August 1914. He landed in France on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action on 30th July 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
