James Pettinger was born in 1897 in West Stockwith and was the son of James a canal boatman and Alice Pettinger née Fagan of 1 Common Road, Retford. His father James was born in 1872 in Drakeholes and his mother Alice Fagan was born in 1874 in Retford. They were married in 1892 in Retford and went on to have 9 children sadly two of whom died in infancy or early childhood their surviving children were : Elizabeth b1893 Retford, James b1897 West Stockwith, Walter b1899 West Stockwith, George William b1903 West Stockwith, Hilda b1904 West Stockwith and Charles and Frank both born 1910 in Retford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Common Road, Retford and are shown James 39 yrs a canal boatman, he is living with his wife Alice 37 yrs and their children , Elizabeth 18 yrs a laundry hand, James 14 yrs assisting his father, Walter 12 yrs , George William 8 yrs, Hilda 7 yrs Charles 7 months and Frank 7 months. as Husband of Annie Lizzie Pettinger, of 7, Spital Hill, Retford, Notts.

1st Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private James Petinger enlisted at Retford, he initially served with service number 208393 in the Royal Engineers before transferring to the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters 9notinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He was killed in action on 21st November 1917 and is buriedin Passchendaele New British cemetery, Belgium, grave reference XVD 27
