Thomas was born at Gainsborough in 1899, the son of John William an engine fitter by trade and Gertrude Rebecca Hewson (nee Moss). He had 5 siblings :- Hilda born 1903,Jack born 1905,William born 1907,Edwin born 1909 and Elizabeth born 1910.In the 1911 census his family are living on Canal Lane,West Stockwith while Thomas is living with his grandparents Thomas and Sarah Moss at 5 Cobden Street, Gainsborough at this time he is 12 years of age and a scholar.
He was a butcher by trade

1/8th Bn The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment)
Thomas enlisted at Gainsborough on the 28th September 1916,he gave his age as 17 years and 319 days, his occupation as butcher and his address as 5 Cobden Street,Gainsborough and his next of kin as his father John William at West Stockwith. He went into the training reserve and on 16th February 1917 was mobilized. On 11th December he was embarked for France and posted to his battalion 2/8th West Yorkshire Regiment and on 17th January 1918 he joined his battalion in the field. He was killed in action on 26th March 1918 only having been with his battalion for just over 2 months. His name is commemorated on the Arras memorial
