Samuel Barlow was born in Worksop in 1883 to William and Elizabeth Barlow, and two years later he had a sister, Abigail, also born there. The Barlow’s had six children altogether but only four surviving. After 1885, the family moved on to 18 Wharf Lane, Newbold & Dunston, Chesterfield and 10 years later to 32 East Street Hasland, Chesterfield where Samuel was working as a colliery labourer. In 1906, Samuel married Beatrice Kate Broadhead at Rotherham and by 1911 had had a daughter who they named Mary Winifred born at 43 Fitzwilliam Street, Swinton, Yorks.

A Bty 55th Bde Royal Field Artillery
Samuel Barlow Samuel had been born in Worksop in 1883 and shortly after his family had moved to Hasland, Chesterfield. Samuel worked as a colliery labourer until he joined, and was already serving in the Royal Field Artillery in 1914 as a Gunner. He died at Curragh Barracks in Ireland (where he is buried in the Military Cemetery) on 26 September 1914 apparently due to natural causes. Courtesy of Robert Illett
