Lance Corporal
8th Bn King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment)
Peter Burton Peter was born in Worksop in 1886 but shortly afterwards appears to have lost both his father and mother, as in 1901 he is shown as living with his grandmother and aunt in Chesterfield. On leaving school he obtained employment as a milk boy for a farmer at Birch-in-Rusholme near Manchester from where he enrolled in the 8th Battalion of the Kings Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment. The 8th was one of those Kitchener volunteer battalions which first saw action during the Battle of the Somme. On the day of the death of L/Cpl Burton, 24 July 1916, ‘A’ Company of the Battalion was fighting at the notorious Deville Wood (Devils Wood to the troops). Peter burton had no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing. Courtesy of Robert Illett.
