George was born in 1895 the third child of Henry and Matilda Cummings who lived at 1 Netherton Road. Henry earned his living as an auctioneer’s clerk and grocer. The family was somewhat peripatetic as Henry had previously been a coach builder working in Sheffield and a shorthand clerk in Birmingham. From Worksop he moved to Barnsley having obtained employment as an insurance superintendent . Matilda Cummins later moved to 9 Rowley Lane South Elmsall Yorkshire.

It was from Barnsley, where he had a job as a grocer’s assistant that George enlisted and served in ‘A’ Company of the 2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, a regular army unit. The battalion was serving in the sodden area near to the coast at Nieport in Belgium with the Germans preparing for an attack when George was killed. Nieuport Memorial
