Matthew Lee Matthew was born at 4, 2 Court, Dock Road in 1890 and joined the other seven children of Henry and Charlotte Lee, who were further joined within six years by two sisters and another brother. His maternal grandfatheralso came to live with the family. All the men in the household were miners. Mathew married just befoere the outbreak of the war and lived at Hodthorpe with his young wife Edith before moving to Fitzwilliam near Barnsley. Private Matthew Lee must have been not to tall as he was serving in the 16th Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment, a Bantam Battalion when he was killed in heavy German shelling on 19 July 1916 preparatory for a counter attack following British success at the Bazentin Ridge. Having had no known grave his name also appears on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing. Courtesy of Robert Illett
