Private
1st Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
George Seaman George was born in 1890 when his father Moses, a miner, and his mother Sarah lived at 56 Abbey Street. Before the war George had signed up as a regular with the 1st Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters who were stationed in Bombay in India at the outbreak of the war. On 3 September 1914, Private George Seaman was one of 885 Privates who embarked on the SS Thongwa to sail to arrive at Plymouth on 2 October. However, when the Battalion moved to camp near Winchester, George was left in Plymouth and taken to hospital, most likely with a disease contracted in India as he died in Plymouth on 9 October, and buried at Efford Cemetery. It must have been a shattering time for his sister Lucy who then lived on John Street, as she lost her mother Sarah, her father Moses and then her brother George all in the space of less than one year Courtesy of Robert Illett
CWG additional information:- Brother of Mrs. Lucy Good, of 40, John St., Worksop.
