He was the 34 year-old son of the late William and Ann James, of 93 Wellington Street, Burton-on-Trent and the brother of Walter James Tom married his wife Ada Miller in 1908 at Burton on Trent In 1911 they lived at 30 Chatsworth Avenue Basford Nottingham with Thomas's brother Josiah 36 yrs a brewers cellarman and his wife Sarah and son Walter. Thomas was shown as being 28 yrs a brewers labourer, he is living at the address with his wife Ada 25 yrs and son Thomas Edward 2 yrs. His wife and son lived at 122 Rosetta Road, New Basford Nottingham.
In 1911 he was a brewer's labourer.

Private Thomas James, enlisted at Nottingham, whilst residing at New Basford he served with the 10th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he landed in the Balkans on 28th August 1915 later transferring to the Western Front where was killed in action on 31st October 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
Death notice published 7th December 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “JAMES. – Killed in action, October 31st, Thomas James, Sherwood Foresters, Basford.
