Walter Handel Sanderson was born in 1895 the son of James a cane worker and Lavinia Sanderson (née Cundy). James was born in 1866 at Whittington Moor, Derbyshire, Lavinia Cundy in 1866 at Old Basford. She died on 22nd May 1895 at Nottingham aged 29. They were married on 2nd May 1885 and had the following children - James Edgar b.1886, Clarice b.1892 and Walter Handel b.1895. In 1911, the family lived at 139, Vernon Avenue, Old Basford, Nottingham. Clarice worked as a lace drawer. James died on 20 September 1954 aged 89.
In 1911, Walter Sanderson was a pit pony driver below ground.

Inscription on family gravestone, Basford Cemetery: 'In loving memory of Lavinia the beloved wife of James Sanderson who died May 22nd 1895 aged 29 years. Though we may mourn those in life the dearest they shall return: Christ when thou appears. Also Elizabeth wife of the above who died February 10th 1900 aged 36 years. Also Private Walter H Sanderson who died in France October 13th (sic) 1916 aged 22 years. Greater love hath no man than this that he lay down his life for his friends. Also the above James Sanderson who died Sept. 20th 1954 aged 89 years. Reunited.'
