James Hayes was born in 1886 at Sutton on Trent and was the son of the late Samuel (died 1898) a general labourer and Eliza Hayes née Gilbert in 1891 and 1901 they lived on High Street Sutton on Trent. His father Samuel was born in 1848 at Sutton on Trent, his mother Eliza Gilbert was born in 1849 also at Sutton Trent, married on 22nd June 1868 at Sutton on Trent, they went on to have the following children, John b1869, Annie b1871, Rose b1875, Fred b1877, Alvina b1879, Charles b1881, Pricilla b1884, James b1886 and Lizzie b1888, all were born at Sutton on Trent. In the 1911 census his widow mother Eliza is shown as being 62 yrs a charwoman living at Butt Close Cottages, High Street, Sutton on Trent. In the same 1911 census we find that James has left the family home and is living at Lydhurst Bothy, Warninglid, Hayward Heath Sussex, he is shown as being 25 yrs of age singe and a gardener, he is living at the address with 4 other gardeners
In 1901 he was a garden boy at nurseries and a gardener in 1911

14th Bn Durham Light Infantry
Private James Hayes enlisted at Kirby Lonsdale whilst residing at Sutton on Trent, he initially served with service number 3223 in the Derbyshire Yeomanry. He was killed in action on 31st March 1917 whilst serving with the 14th battalion Durham Light infantry and is buried at Bethune Town Cemetery Pas de Calais France Grave Reference: VI C 52
