William Oscar Hooley was born in 1899 in Hyson Green and was the son of Oscar a threader in the lace industry and Ada Hooley née Osborne of Nottingham. His father Oscar was born in 1864 in Draycott Derbyshire, his mother Ada Osborne was born in 1866 in Basford, they were married in 1884 in Nottingham and went on to have 3 children all born in Hyson Green :- Ellen Mary b1885, William Oscar b1889 and Hilda May b1903. His father Oscar died in 1904 in Nottingham aged 40 yrs. In the 1911 census William Oscar is shown as being 22 yrs, a private soldier, a carpenter serving with the 1st battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in Hong Kong. In the same 1911 census , his mother Ada is 45 yrs a widow working as a slip winder and living at 14 Plimsoll Street, Hyson Green with her daughter Hilda May 7 yrs a scholar. William Oscar married his wife Dorothy Mary Sharpe in September 1918 in Nottingham, they lived at 51 Gauntley Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham.
He was a professional soldier serving in the Army in the 1911 census in Hong Kong.

1st Bn King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry
Pre-war regular soldier, Sgt. William Oscar Hooley, M.M. [1] & Bar, [2] enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He landed in France on 15th January 1915 and died of wounds on 2nd November 1918. He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen. [1] 'London Gazette,' 17th June 1919. [2] 'London Gazette,' 20th August 1919.
Death notice published 6th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HOOLEY. – Died on November 2nd, at military hospital, Sergt. W. Hooley, M.M., K.O.Y.L.I., from the effects of wounds and pneumonia.
