Hyson Green
Archibald Marson was born in 1888 at Hyson Green and was the son of Henry a brass finisher and Elizabeth Ann Marson née Youngs of 14 Ward Street Hyson Green Nottingham. His father Henry was born in 1861 at Sheffield, his mother Elizabeth Ann Youngs was born in 1865 at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Wisbech registration district, they went on to have 7 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their children were Archibald b1888 Hyson Green, Gertrude b1889 Manchester, their remaining children all born in Hyson Green were Arthur Owen b1891, Frank b1893, Gladys b1896, Clara Doris b1901 and Wilfred b1906. In the 1911 census the family are living at 25 Ashwell Street, Nottingham and are shown as Henry Marson 50 yrs a brass finisher, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann 46 Yrs and their children Archibald 23 yrs a hosiery trimmer, Gertrude 22 yrs a cigarette packer, Arthur Owen 20 yrs a yarn maker up, Frank 18 yrs a yarn maker, Gladys 15 yrs a box maker and Wilfred 5 years of age.
In the 1911 census he was a hosiery trimmer and upon enlistment a hosiery factory hand.

Private Archibald Marson originally enlisted on 28th August 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 25 yrs and 6 months, his occupation was that of a hosiery factory hand. He was posted to the Royal Field Artillery with the service number 95930. He was discharged from the Army on 10th February 1915 for misconduct being 'no use as a soldier' although he had 'not misconducted himself with a view to discharge.' His character was described as 'bad'. He presumably subsequently re-enlisted or was conscripted as he was serving with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment when he was killed in action on 17th June 1917 and is buried at Fosse No.10 Communal Cemetery Extension, Sains-En-Gohelle, France. Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 8/7/1917: 'Marson. - Died of gas and wounds received June 17th Private Archibald Marson aged 29 Sherwood Foresters. Midnight stars shine on the grave of one we loved but could not save. - From his sorrowing mother, brothers, sisters and fiancée Lizzie.'
