John William Needham was born in 1886 at Nottingham and was the son of Douglas a lithographic artist and Emma Needham née Day of 55 Brushfield Street, Nottingham. His father Douglas was born in 1854 at Kimberley, his mother Emma Day was born in 1858 at Nottingham, they were married in 1877 their marriage was recorded in the Prestwich, Manchester registration district., they had the following children, Gertrude Ada b1878 Manchester, Douglas Joseph b1880 Manchester, Florence b1881 Nottingham, Julia Wilkinson b1884 Nottingham, John William b1886 Nottingham amd Mabel Alice b1897 Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family was living at 55 Brushfield Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham and were shown as Douglas 57 yrs a lithographic artist, he is living with his wife Emma 53 yrs and their children, Douglas Joseph 31 yrs a machine mender, Julia Wilkinson 27 yrs a blouse designer, John William 25 yrs a cane worker and Mabel Alice 14 yrs a blouse maker. John married his wife Blanche Elizabeth Litchfield in 1916 in Nottingham, they lived at 55 Brushfield Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. Following his death his widow Blanche was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 11th November 1918. He was the husband of Blanche Needham.
In the 1911 census he is a can worker.

22nd Bn (Tyneside Scottish) Northumberland Fusiliers
Private John William Needham enlisted at Nottingham, he served wit the 22nd battalion (Tyneside Scottish ) Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 14th April 1918 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on panel 2 the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
In Memoriam Nottingham Evening Post 14/4/1919:' 'Needham. In ever loving memory of my dear husband Jack killed in action April 13th 1918. One of the best. Still remembered. From his loving wife Blanche.'
