Harold Newcombe was born in 1896 at Nottingham and was the son of the late Walter a printer and Annie Eliza Newcombe née Martin of 14 Collison Terrace, Scotholme Street, Hyson Green. His father Walter was born in 1863 at Beeston, he died in 1911 aged 47 yrs, his mother Annie Eliza Martin was born in 1865 in Lincoln, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham registration district, they went on to have the following children, Mable b1888, Lilly b1890, Walter b1893, Harold b1896, Bert b1899, Mary b1902 and Ada b1906. In the 1911 census the family are living at 45 Shipstone Street, Basford and were shown as Walter Newcombe 48 yrs a printer, he is living with his wife Annie 46 yrs and their children, Mabel 23 yrs a laundress, Lily 21 yrs a lace maker, Walter 18 yrs a brewery bottler, Harold 15 yrs a brewery bottler, Bert 12 yrs a scholar, Mary 9 yrs a scholar and Ada 5 yrs of age.

Private Harold Newcombe attested on 8th December 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 20 yrs and 4 months his address was 14 Collison Terrace, Scotholme Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham, he was a hosiery dyer and his next of kin was his mother Annie of the same address. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 9th August 1916 and reported to the depot at Derby where he was posted to the 2/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 26th February 1917 and was killed in action on 26th August 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on panel 99-102 on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
