Alfred Charles Offler was born on 24th March 1882 at Nottingham and was the son of Charles, a stone mason, and Sarah Elizabeth Offler née Higgs, of 3 Lenton Street, Nottingham. His father Charles was born in 1857 at Cinderhill, his mother Sarah Elizabeth Higgs was born in 1864 at East Bridgford. They were married in 1881; the marriage was registered in the Nottingham registration district. They went on to have the following children, Alfred Charles b1882, Martha b1884, William Henry b1886, Charles b1889, Ernest b1892, Minnie b1896 and Ada b1897; all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family was living at 3 Lenton Street, Nottingham and shown as Charles 54 yrs a stone mason, his wife Sarah 47 yrs and their children, William Henry 26 yrs a stone mason, Alfred 29 yrs a hotel barman, Minnie 15 yrs an errand girl and scholar and Ada 14 yrs a scholar.
In the 1911 census he is shown as a hotel barman.

Lance Corporal Alfred Charles Offler originally served in the Royal Navy. He joined the Royal Navy on 10th August 1897 and on 24th March 1900, his eighteen birthday, he signed on for 12 years service. A;fred served in various ships but deserted ('Run') in 1900 and again in 1902. He was 'recovered' on both occasions and eventually dismissed the service in 1902. On the outbreak of war he enlisted in Sheffield on 27th October 1914 giving his age as 32 yrs and his occupation as that of labourer. He was posted to the York and Lancaster Regiment at Pontefract. He was promoted unpaid lance corporal on 4th December 1914 and as paid lance corporal on 2nd July 1915. He landed in France on 2nd June 1915 and was killed in action at Hooge on 9th August 1915 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
