Edward William Thornton was born in 1898 at Nottingham and was the son of John a warp lace hand and Lucy Anne Thornton née Lester of 301, Radford Rd., Hyson Green, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1863 at Nottingham, his mother Lucy Ann Lester was born in 1867 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Ethel b1888 at Basford, John Richard b1892 at Nuneaton, Warwickshire, Edward William b1898 Nottingham, Gladys Florence b1902 Nottingham and Noel Arthur b1905 Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 301 Radford Road, Hyson Green Nottingham and are shown as John Thornton 48 yrs a warp lace hand, he is living with his wife Lucy Ann 44 yrs and their children, Ethel 23 yrs a slip winder, John Richard 19 yrs a brass bobbin hand, Edward William 13 yrs an errand boy, Gladys Florence 9 yrs a scholar and Noel Arthur 6 yrs of age.

10th Bn The Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own)
Rifleman Edward William Thornton enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number C/7663 in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was serving with the 10th battalion Rifle Corps when he was killed in action on 20th September 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial panel 145-147
