George Kelland was born in 1896 the son of John Samuel a shop keeper and Eliza Kelland née Calvert of 30 Plains Road, Mapperley, Nottingham. John Samuel was born in 1866 at Wolverhampton, Eliza Calvert was born in 1862 at West Bromwich, married on 20th July 1890 at St David's Church, Birmingham, they had a further child a daughter Selina Elizabeth born 1892 at Birmingham. In 1911 the family were living at 37 Bridge Street, Newcastle, Staffordshire, they later moved to 23 Haydn Road, Sherwood Nottingham before moving to Mapperley following Georges death
He was a groom and miners carter.

Private George Kelland initially enlisted on 28th October 1912 at Stoke on Trent giving his age as 17 yrs and 344 days, his address was 37 Bridge Street, Newcastle, Stafffordshire, he was posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment. He was discharged from the army on 28th December 1913 when it was discovered he was under age (he was only 16 yrs of age). However he elected to re enlisted into the North Staffordshire Regiment whom he joined on 31st December 1913. He was mobilised for war on 4th August 1914 and was transferred to the East Yorkshire Regiment on 2nd May 1915. Landing in France on 8th May 1915 he was killed in action on 28th September 1915 and his name is commemorated on the Loss Memorial.
