John (Jack) May was born in 1897 at Mapperley, Nottingham and was the son of William George a cellarman and Jessie May née Campton of 292 Woodborough Road Nottingham. His father William George was born in 1860 Southborough, Kent and his mother Jessie Campton was born 1870 at Doncaster, they married in 1891 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Violet b1894, John b1897 and Herbert b1906, all were born in Mapperley. In the 1911 census the family are living at 501 Kent Road, Mapperley and are shown as William 51 yrs a cellarman, he is living with his wife Jessie 41 yrs and their children Violet 17 yrs a drapery assistant, John 14 yrs a hairdressers assistant and Herbert 5 yrs a scholar also living with them is Lille Campton 30 yrs a machinist and sister in law. On his enlistment he gave his address as 596 Woodborough Road, Nottingham
He was a tobacconist and hairdresser.

Lance Corporal John May enlisted on 10th November 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his address as 596 Woodborough Road, Nottingham, his age falsely as 19 yrs and 5 months (1911 census was 14 yrs of age) and his next of kin as his father William May of the same address. He was posted to the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters and landed in France on 28th June 1915 and was appointed a Lance Corporal on 8th December 1915. He died of syncope on 26th March 1916 and is buried at Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Mont-St. Eloi, France. Plot 1. Row D. Grave 23.
