Samuel Arthur Offiler was born in 1878 at Basford and was the 39 year-old son of Frederick a lace threader and Ellen Offiler née Gothard of Nottingham. His father Frederick was born in 1846 at Basford, his mother Ellen Gothard was born in 1845 also at Basford, they were married in 1866 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Helena b1869, Fred Ambrose b1873, William b1876, Samuel b1878, Edith b1879, Wallace b1881, and Grace b1886. Samuel Arhtur married his wife Ada Goulder (born 31st December 1877 Somercotes) in 1897 at Nottingham, they lived at 12 Stanhope Street, Long Eaton, they had the following children, Constance b1900, Samuel Gothard b1905 and George Arthur b1907 all were born in Radford. In 1911 census the family are living at 30 Stanhope Street, Long Eaton, they are shown as Samuel Arthur Offiler 34 yrs a carriage grinder he is living with his wife Ada 34 yrs and their children, Constance 11 yrs a scholar, Samuel 6 yrs and George Army 4 yrs of age. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 26th November 1917.
In 1911 he was a carriage grinder.

2/5th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Sergeant Samuel Arthur Offiler, enlisted in Long Eaton and served with the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action on 4th May 1917. He is buried in Bouvincourt Communal Cemetery.
