Arthur Mantle was born in 1898 at Nottingham and was the son of John Hardy Mantle a boot repairer and Eleanor Mantle née Forrest of 99 Duke Street, Basford. His father John Hardy was born in 1873 at Nottingham, his mother Eleanor Forrest was born in 1874 also at Nottingham, they were married on 23rd June 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they went on to have the following children, John Edward b1897, Arthur b1898, Elizabeth b1900, David James b1901, Clara Selina b1907 and Ernest b1908 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Court Street, Radford Road, Nottingham and are shown as John Hardy Mantle 38 yrs a boot repairer, he is living with his wife Eleanor 37 yrs and their children, John Edward 14 yrs a hosiery worker, Arthur 13 yrs a scholar, Elizabeth 11 yrs a scholar, David James 10 yrs, Clara Selina 4 yrs and Ernest 3 years of age.

8th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Lance Corporal Arthur Mantle enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Basford, he served with the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 3rd October 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis en Artois Memorial
His brother Corporal John Edward Mantle enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) He was killed in action on 2nd September 1918 and is buried at Windmill British Cemetery, Monchy 2.E.1
