Joseph King was born in 1895 at Barkstone, Leicestershire and was the son of George Henry a railway platelayer and Harriett King of 8, Monsall Street, New Basford, Nottingham. His father George Henry was born in 1875 at Quorn, his mother Harriett was born in 1872 at Barkestone, Leicestershire, they were married in C1895 and went on to have the following children Joseph b1895 Barkestone, their remaining children were all born in Nottingham and were Sidney b1898, Hilda b1903, Constance Mary b1906 and Doris Lucy b1907. In the 1911 census the family are living at 59 Monsall Street, Basford and are shown as George Henry 36 yrs a railway platelayer, he is living with his wife Harriett 39 yrs and their children, Joseph 16 yrs a porter in a paper merchants, Sinney 13 yrs a scholar, Hilda 8 yrs, Constance Mary 5 yrs and Doris Lucy 4 yrs, they state they have been married for 15 years and have had 6 children, and one had died.
He was a porter in a paper merchants.

1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Joseph King enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at New Basford, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action, 1st July 1916, aged 24, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
