John William Parker was born in 1897 at Mapperley, Nottingham and was the son of the late Samuel Skidmore Parker a lace maker and Clara Parker née Smith of 3 Cliff Terrace, Hollis Street, New Basford Nottingham. His father Samuel Skidmore was born in 1866 at Sneinton, Nottingham, he died in 1910 aged 44 yrs, his mother Clara Smith was born in 1862 at Basford, they were married in 1895 at Nottingham, they had 4 children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census , John William is living with his widowed mother at 3 Cliffe Terrace, Hollis Street, Nottingham, he is shown as being 14 yrs of age and a chemical packer his mother Clara Parker a widow is 49 yrs of age and a lace slip winder.
He was a chemical packer prior to enlisting at Nottingham.

1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private John William Parker enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at New Basford, He served with the 1/7th battalin Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France on 27th October 1915 and was killed in action, 1st July 1916, age 20, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
