Albert Bellaby was born John Albert Bellaby in 1890 at Basford and was the son of George a hosiery trimmer and Lucy Ann Bellaby née Robinson of Basford, Nottingham. His father George was born in 1862 at Basford, his mother Lucy Ann Robinson was born in 1861 also at Basford, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had the following children, George Fred b1884, Florrie b1888, John Albert b1890, Gertrude b1894, Harold b1896 and Bernard b1899, all were born in Basford. Albert married his wife Florence Jane Brown (born 14th March 1888 at Nottingham) in 1909 at Nottingham, they lived at 75 Coppice Road, Highfield, Doncaster and went on to have the following children, Eliza Jane boron 1910 died 1912, Stanley Cyril born 24th August 1912, Walter born 22nd September 1914 and Ivy Irene born 23rd April 1917. In the 1911 census the family are living at 16 Crown Yard, Park Lane, Basford and are shown as Albert 21 yrs a cane worker, he is living with his wife Florence Jane 23 yrs and their daughter Eliza Jane 6 months of age. Following his death his widow Florence Jane was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 26th May 1919.

Private John Albert Bellaby enlisted at Doncaster and served with the 2nd battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed in action on 24th October 1918 and is buried at St. Souplet British Cemetery
