John Cross was born in 1897 the son of William Henry Cross a coal miner and Sabrina Cross née Carrier. William Henry was born in 1858 at Nottingham and died in the city aged 48 in 1906. Sabrina Carrier was born in 1862 at Basford. Married in 1880, they had seven children - William b1882, Arthur b1890, Beatrice b1892, Henry b1894, John b1897, Lily b1898 and Edward b1906. All were born at Basford. On the 1911 census the family lived at 94, Arnold Road, Old Basford with John’s widowed grandfather William Cross. William and Henry were pit banksmen, Arthur a lace bleacher and Beatrice a lace dresser.
In 1911, he was a van lad but had become a coal loader (miner) by the time of his enlistment.

16th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
John Cross enlisted on 29th May 1915 at Nottingham He was posted to the 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 16th March 1916 and was killed in action on 10th October 1916. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
