Joseph Gibson was born in 1891 at Basford and was the son of Edward a carter dustman and Elizabeth (Betsy) Gibson née Orridge of 58 Vernon Avenue, Old Basford, Nottingham. His father Edward was born in 1854 at Belton, Leicestershire and his mother Betsy Orridge was born in 1856 at Willoughby, Leicestershire, they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham Registration district, they they went on to have 12 children, sadly 5 died in infancy or early childhood, their children were John b1880, Edward b1884 Daybrook, George 1885, Matilda b1888, Joseph b1890, Albert b1894, and Ernest Gibson b1895 all were born in Basford. In the 1911 census the family lived at 32 Queen Street Basford Nottingham and were shown as Edward 57 yrs a carter dustman, he is living with this wife Betsy 55 yrs and their children, Edward 27 yrs a general labourer, Joseph 20 yrs a general labourer, Albert 17 yrs a general labourer and Ernest 16 yrs a van boy.
In 1911 he was a general labourer.

Private Joseph Gibson enlisted at Derby, he served with the 1/6th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 15th September 1916, having no known memorial his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier & Face 10B 11B 12B
